我想举个反例最能说清楚我前面的意思,譬如说广告吧,昨晚我听到说威氏食用油不会侵浸食物。没错,这是实话,但是不说谎和科学上的诚实并不是一回事。广告里漏掉的一句话是,所有的食用油在一定温度下都不会侵浸食物,而在另一些温度下所有的油都会,威氏的油也会。广告想告诉听众的并不是事实,而是广告语中的暗示。这种区别我们一定要看清。
英文原文:The easiest way to explain this idea is to contrast it, for example, with advertising. Last night I heard that Wesson oil doesn't soak through food. Well, that's true. It's not dishonest; but the thing I'm talking about is not just a matter of not being dishonest, it's a matter of scientific integrity, which is another level. The fact that should be added to that advertising statement is that no oils soak through food, if operated at a certain temperature. If operated at another temperature, they all will – including Wesson oil. So it's the implication which has been conveyed, not the fact, which is true, and the difference is what we have to deal with.

骂人大师李敖有句名言,“我骂人的方法就是别人都骂人是王八蛋,可我有一个本领,我能证明你是王八蛋。”看过《李敖有话说》这个节目的人应该记得,他在骂人时(很少有他不骂人的时候),总是能拿出一大堆证据,不管是照片、史料还是书籍,来支持他的论点(某某是王八蛋),结果挺令人信服。
李敖这邪门的功夫,其实挺正,来自他的偶像、五四运动主将之一胡适。胡适受其老师美国学者杜威的实用主义影响,推崇科学方法——尤其是实证,总结出两句话,一是“大胆假设,小心求证”,二是“有几分证据,说几分话”。这两句真言,李敖肯定将之融入了血液。他骂人之前,肯定是先假设某某是个王八蛋,然后去找证据。没有证据,或是证据太少,他肯定不敢公开骂。他敢大张旗鼓骂的,肯定是有一大堆证据的。 李敖把科学方法用在骂人上,骂出个“大师”来,人见人怕。七十多岁了,仍然气势如虹,可见科学方法的力量。当然,王八蛋太多,像雨后蘑菇,总也骂不完,也是李记骂人店生意一直兴隆的原因之一。

Ann Arbor—At a news conference Tuesday, the Department of Public Safety announced the discovery and safe return of a student found stranded on the University’s North Campus. DPS spokesperson Barbara Kollingsworth said that the student was “cold and hungry, but should be fine, with proper counseling services. European Commission has just announced an agreement whereby English will be the official language of the European Union rather than German, which was the other possibility.
As part of the negotiations, the British Government conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a 5- year phase-in plan that would become known as "Euro-English".
In the first year, "s" will replace the soft "c". Sertainly, this will make the sivil servants jump with joy.

July 03 掉书袋 - 何谓“东道主”近来世界杯激战正酣,德国队占尽地利人和,势头强劲。中央台解说人员频繁使用“东道主”一词指代德国队,这个词好像我是在小学某年级看奥运会的时候听到的,不知道什么意思,不过听着听着也就明白了。高中时候,在《左传》里看到过这个词,由于这本书够老,所以我臆断一下,“东道主”这个词是出自《左传》的。昨天在《古代汉语》的文选部分里又看到了,没想到这还是一篇这么有名的文章:烛之武退秦师。
原文: 九月甲午,晋侯秦伯围郑,以其无礼于晋,且贰于楚也。晋军函陵,秦军汜南。 佚之狐言于郑伯曰:“国危矣!若使烛之武见秦君,师必退。”公从之。辞曰:“臣之壮也,犹不如人;今老矣,无能力也已。”公曰:“吾不能早用子,今急而求子,是寡人之过也。然郑亡,子亦有不利焉!”许之。 夜,缒而出。见秦伯,曰:“秦晋围郑,郑既知其亡矣。若亡郑而有益于君,敢以烦执事。越国以鄙远,君知其难也;焉用亡郑以陪邻?邻之厚,君之薄也。若舍郑以为东道主,行李之往来,共其乏困,君亦无所害。且君尝为晋君赐矣。许君焦瑕,朝济而夕设版焉,君之所知也。夫晋何厌之有?既东封郑,又欲肆其西封;不阙秦,将焉取之?阙秦以利晋,唯君图之。” 秦伯说,与郑人盟,使杞子、逢孙、杨孙戍之,乃还。 子犯请击之。公说曰:“不可。微夫人之力不及此。困人之力而敝之,不仁;矢其所与,不知;以乱易整,不武。吾其还也。”亦去之。

又及: 其实按理说,只有在东边的才应该叫东道主,中国由于独特的地理位置,很适合做很多国家的东道主。不过像这一次的德国,做英国法国的东道主还算可以,碰到乌克兰,它就变成了西道主了,同理,碰到瑞典就变成南道主,碰到什么科特迪瓦自然就是北道主。但是BT的诸如巴西阿根廷这些,就只好是什么东北道主了,听起来很有黑帮老大的味道。我想,应该就是这个道理。 July 01 一个很难的数学问题今天在一本哲学书里看到了一个数学问题,是毕达哥拉斯学派已经解决的问题。我稍微改写了一下,大家有兴趣的研究一下,不要输给几千年前的老头子。
有这样一个数列,每一项都是一个有两个数组成的数组,可以写作(an, bn)
数列的第一项是(1,1),以后每一项由以下规则推出: an+1 = an + bn; bn+1 = 2*an + bn; 也就是说每项的第一个数是前一项两数之和,每项第二个数是前一项第一个数的两倍加上第二个数。 这样下去我们可以推出第二项,第三项等等: (1,1) (2,3) (5,7) (12,17) .... 请问,当n趋向于无穷大的时候,各项中的两个数的比值,也就是bn/an,的极限是多少? 答案我用背景色写在下面了,算作提示吧,因为有了答案要知道为什么还是要想一下的。 答案是2的平方根,这也是古希腊学者求这个无理数的方法,但是为什么这个方法可以求出2的平方根呢? 翻译的问题没太多好说的了,书本身还是很不错的,帕斯卡是个高人。书的后半部分宗教性质过浓,渐渐无聊。

How ludicrous is reason, blown with a breath in every direction! June 19 可别小看助教下面这一段文字节选自王力主编的《古代汉语》九八年校订重排本第三册879页:
古代有博士、助教等官。秦汉时博士掌通古今、备顾问。汉文帝时,《论语》、《孝经》、《孟子》、《尔雅》皆立博士,汉武帝设五经博士并置博士弟子学习经术 ... 以聪明威重者一人为博士祭酒。晋代以博士为国子学和太学的教官,并设助教作为博士的副职,后代沿置,直到明清中央教育机构国子监还有博士和助教。北魏以后地方教官一度也称为博士、助教。附带说一说教授。宋代府州开始设教授,负责教诲所属生员。明清府学设教授,州学设学正,县学设教论,各以训导作为副职。
一枫按:看来博士祭酒差不多应该相当于今天的教育部部长,博士也至少是个副部级别,助教算下来好歹也是个厅级。教授似乎也是个厅级,和助教不相上下。另外,以前的“学士”,也是个不小的官,诸如龙图阁学士,天章阁学士,观文殿学士等等(这几个都是宋朝的),相当于现在的科学院院士。这些博士助教教授学士,到了今天都大大缩水了,不比原来那么值钱了。 May 13 坐着看书不腰疼 - 思想录 - 23. (2) ... 例如,有的人很理解水的种种作用,而关于水的原则却是很少的 ...
水的种种作用似乎真的很多,可以喝,可以灌溉,可以冷却,这里到底指什么呢?所谓“水的原则”又是指得什么呢?为什么Pascal说这些原则很少呢?看前后文没有相关的解释,于是参考了一下英译本,对应词句如下: For example, the former easily learn hydrostatics, where the premises are few ... 我无法知道“有的人”和former哪个更符合Pascal的原意,但是两个句子主体的高下优劣却是很显然的。 hydrostatics指的是流体静力学,正是Pascal做出重大贡献的科学领域,说流体静力学的“premises”很少,也确实是很合适的,毫无疑问,比“水的种种作用”要明确和正确得多;而且,premises指的更多是学科发展的一些基础理论(例如几何学的一些公理),译作“原则”不是很合适,也容易引起误解。 没能把流体静力学的意思翻译出来,恐怕也是何先生的专业所限,只怪Pascal搞的东西太多了,呵呵。
4. (61) ... 我很可以处理顺序这一段如下 ...
“很可以”这个说法,有点不自然,could have应该有更好的译法。
“处理顺序这一段如下”肯定是不通的,作者在注解里写道:
“处理顺序这一段如下”意谓“把这一段的顺序处理如下”。
看来何先生还是知道哪个句子是通顺的;但是把一个不通的东西放到正文里,不知道算是什么意思,难道算是“体现原著者的写作风格”?
5. (35) ... 否则恐怕某一种品质就会占上风,并会给人施洗的 ...
英译:... for fear some one quality prevail and designate the man ...
哦~ 明白了!至少字面上明白了。
6. 书中主要用“如其”一词表示“如果”的意思,例如:
(66) 人必须认识自己:如其这不能有助于发现真理,至少这将有助于规范自己的的生活;没有别的比这更正确的了。 何译本全篇使用的通俗的白话文,突然出现一些像“如其”这样的古典词语,实在有些奇怪。类似的例子还有:
(72) ... 因之,如果我们单纯[是]物质,我们就会什么都不认识 ... 同时,限于两种语言很难一一对应,译文的正式程度也有多处前后不一致的,例如:
(18) ... 因为人之大患就在于对自己不能理解的事物怀有不安的好奇心 ...
“人之大患”是个很典雅正式的说法,和后面语言的风格不太和谐。学外语的人,在用外语写作时,往往不注意或者没有能力注意到语言正式性一致的问题,但是对于母语中文,应该还是能注意的。写出类似“吾乃住在你家对过的”这样的句子,恐怕只能用来表达一种滑稽效果了。 May 11 坐着看书不腰疼 - 思想录 - 1目标书: 思想录 (Pensées), 帕斯卡(Pascal) 著, 何兆武 译 商务印书馆 1985年版,目前限于第一和第二章

《思想录》是帕斯卡生前未完成的一部手稿,有不少地方只有简要的几句话的提纲。书的内容十分精彩,可窥大师风采之一斑,也能切实感受到罗素的一句话的真切:帕斯卡将他的天才过多浪费在了宗教之上——《西方哲学史》(根据记忆译写)

最近一周看了何译《思想录》的前两章,做了一些笔记,也对照了一些Trotter的英译,初步结论如下:
1. 书翻译得不是很好懂,一部分是帕斯卡这本书的风格的问题,一部分责任在译者。
2. 何先生的外语水平超越他的哲学和科学水平,导致部分翻译语义不明确,难以理解
3. 何先生的翻译风格颇可商榷,学究气严重,时有文白相间,句式冗长等不良习惯
4. 帕斯卡写得真是好,虽然有些看不懂,有些我不很同意。
下面慢慢用例子说明以上观点。括号内的数字即书中条目的编号。
1. 书的封面就能看出一些何先生的“权威性”,著者写的是“帕斯卡尔”;当“帕斯卡”作为压强的单位已经写入国家强制标准(GB)时,加一个“尔”字,不知道是不是要付法律或行政责任。
2. (1) 几何学精神与敏感性精神的区别 —— ...
主语里的两个词我一个都看不懂,在注解中,译者说道:
“敏感性精神”原文为l'esprit de finesse,系指与几何学的逻辑推论方式对立的心灵的知觉或敏感。Trotter英译本径作“直觉的精神”。又,esprit一词十七世纪时尚未获得十八世纪“心智”的含义,故此处仍译作“精神”。
英译为:The difference between the mathematical and the intuitive mind. 我一看就明白!
按照何先生的注解,将esprit翻译为mind是不合适的,因为那时并没有这样的意思,但是“精神”一词的意义实在太多,这样的翻译反而让人难以理解。“几何学精神”能让我联想到毕达哥拉斯的世界观,却很难想到一个和“敏感”相对的意义出来。同时,“敏感性精神”更是生造得厉害,恐怕除了这本书以外,再没有别处用了,这样的翻译我无法苟同。帕斯卡的原意似乎是指逻辑推理的思维方式和直觉的思维方式之间的区别对立,何先生翻译成“几何学”与“敏感性”的区别,对此,我只能庆幸自己有英译版可以参照了。 May 10 坐着看书不腰疼 - 人类的知识 - 1昨天某同志批评我的space没劲,于是今天继续无聊,来讨论一下学术问题。
密歇根图书馆借的罗素的《人类的知识》回国前还掉了,由于没看完,回家放了一本商务印书馆的译本在厕所里。近来遇到一个词百思不得其解,更兼该词出现频率极高,于是今天用各种工具研究了一下,看了个究竟。
这个词叫作:“与件”
以我的中文词汇水平,完全无法理解这个词,随便举个例子,书中有一个句子如下:
“认为与件是仅仅属于个人范围内的东西,这是从普罗塔哥拉斯时期以来就为大家所熟悉的一个观点。”
看了三分钟,没有明白。这个“熟悉的观点”,似乎我丝毫不熟悉。
辞海,现代汉语词典,金山词霸,都没有“与件”这个词,google了一下,一共只有四个结果,没有一个有任何意义,而这本书里竟然这个词反复出现。回想以前看过的部分,也不记得有一个很难理解的词语,于是继续困惑。然后今天忍受不下去了,查了一下google book上的英文原文,上面那句话的原文是:
That data are private and individual is a thesis which has been familiar since the time of Protagoras.
原来“与件”就是data,真是长见识了。这句话翻译的可真没有中文简洁的特色,还生造词语,大逆不道。
今天不早了,明天有空骂一下何兆武翻译的《思想录》... 不对,应该说骂一下翻译《思想录》的何兆武,他的罪过比发明一个“与件”还要大不少。 October 28 SOM Calculus OutlineI began to write Calculus lecture last Monday.
